"That Girl From the Dummy Line" is a first person account of growing up in severe poverty in the delta farm region of northeastern Arkansas in 50s and 60s in a tar-papered shack built on a dirt road known as the dummy line.
The dummy line girl was the third of ten children born to an illiterate farmer and his wife, who didn't understand their daughter's love of education or her desire to go to college as she excelled in school. Indeed, they actively attempted to prevent her from leaving home to seek a college degree.
The dummy line girl spent much of her childhood working in the cotton fields. Farm work and other chores took a toll on the dummy line girl's ability to stay on track with her studies and goals. Further complicating her life was a dysfunctional relationship with her parents and an abusive older sister. The local public school system became her refuge and provided her with the hope she needed in order to plan a better future for herself.
This is a story about a girl who refused to accept the path given her by accident of birth - a girl who wanted more and believed she deserved more and was willing to work for it.

Loving this book.. Very well written. Keep in mind that one persons upbringing may be different than what others in the same family experienced. I applaud the author for writing her experiences down on paper as it may have given her some closure to some horrific memories. I myself have horrible memories of my own family members during my childhood. I found it fascinating to find that other members of my family and long time family friends couldn't sympathize with me because they only knew what they saw. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. Just because it didn't happen to you, doesn't mean it didn't happen at all. As much as I enjoyed this book, I hope she writes another. Good for you Martha Ann Sanders!!!!!!!Product details

That Girl From the Dummy Line eBook Martha Sanders Reviews
I like this book very much. I grew up here also. She has captured the feel of the time and place .It was a time when class was much more important then now. The world has changed a lot in our life time.. Thank God our children and grands will never know. To quote a very famous author "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" It's the kind of book that you can't stop thinking about long after the last page is read. Well done Ann, Well done
I like the story in this book. It is well written. The conditions are very similar to mine growing up in the 1960s. I grew up in the area Ann is talking about. Life for children in that era were very different from today. We did not know what a computer was. I think everyone would enjoy reading this book.
Absolutely captivating. Loved every bit of it. Was very difficult for me to put it down to even talk on the phone, and I love talking on the phone. Couldn't wait to get to the end. Ann, you need to write another. We need the "rest of the story." Great job. You brought out every emotion. Thank you for writing this book.
Great book, loved it! I feel fortunate to have known the author in college, and now, 45 years later, realize how it was that she came to be such a beautiful, kind, determined, and artistic lady. She endured many hardships, only to turn them into positives. Very inspirational reading.
I recently read two books in which The School of the Ozarks is featured, one by a former student, the other by a former student and classmate. Both are memoirs.
"The Prince of Point Lookout" by Larry Dablemont is about his experiences as student for two years at the college before transferring to the University of Missouri's School of Journalism. The other, "That Girl From the Dummy Line" by Ann Meredith Sanders, is about her life before she went to The School of the Ozarks.
Both are about coming of age and growing up poor in that period of 1963-73 and knowing that the only way of escaping the poverty of their youth was to get an edudcation. Both writers were the first in their family to attend college. One had encouragement to do so, the other did not. But both writers were the types of youth from the Ozarks plateau that the School was originally founded to help.
Both books are interesting and well-written, and both are books the College should be proud of. Larry, of course is a writer, known for his Outdoor column, articles about hunting and fishing, and books of stories about the Ozark. We'd expect him to be able to tell a compelling story. Ann is writer who comes to the craft much later and almost by accident she was simply a woman "who had a book inside" that had to be released.
The author has an amazing writing talent. She makes you feel both mentally and emotionally as if you were in the story. A guaranteed page turner. With every struggle and accomplishment the writer endured, you are left feeling you have know where to turn to. Thank goodness the writer, as a child, given the many obstacles she had to over come, was able to focus on a bigger picture of opportunities the world had to offer. This book proves when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. A superbly written book that my local library will soon be caring. I ordered 6 more copies for friends. Thanks Ann for sharing your enduring story.
Was very much impressed by the writing and the hardships of the author. She says everyone has a book in them. She certainly did, and hopefully she will have another book left in her. When a person thinks they grew up poor, they need to read this book. They'll know what poor is. Some things happen to us in life that we can't talk about. Ann found the courage to talk about them in this book. I wish I had her courage. I would recommend this book very highly. Anyone who talks bad about it must be a disgruntled family member who doesn't want to face the truth.
